Книга мудрого Натана Щаранского Defending Identity: Its Indispensable Role in Protecting Democracy оказалась понята еще хуже, чем его предыдущая книга The Case For Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror.

Основные идеи The Case For Democracy состоит в том, что
1. Существует принципиальная разница между открытыми демократическими обществами и диктатурами ("обшествами страха"). Для их различения есть простой тест "выхода на площадь".
2. Диктатуры плохи не только из-за моральных соображений, сколько потому, что они фундаментально неустойчивы и склоны к агрессии. Путем внешней агрессии и подогревания образа внешнего врага диктаторские режимы решают внутреннюю проблему сохранения у власти.

Джордж Буш хвалил эту книжку, но, по всей видимости, понял ее превратно.
