After hors d’oeuvres and a light buffet, Robert Kennedy thanked them for coming. He listed what his brother, the president, was doing for civil rights. Then:
Robert Kennedy: “We have a party in revolt and we have to be somewhat considerate about how to keep them on board if the Democratic party is going to prevail in the next elections.” He said blacks need to understand that. Listening to Malcolm X would only bring trouble.
Kennedy talked about black and white Americans fighting together in Vietnam (still two years away).
Jerome Smith of CORE (agitated): “I don’t know what I’m doing here, listening to all this cocktail-party patter. What you’re asking us young black people to do is pick up guns against people in Asia while you have continued to deny us our rights here.”
Smith, a Freedom Rider, had been subjected to savage beatings. He, like many others, was about fed up with non-violence:
Smith: “When I pull the trigger, kiss it good-bye.”
Kennedy was stunned. He thought all Americans would do their patriotic duty when faced with a common enemy.
James Baldwin asked Smith if he would pick up a gun if America declared war.
Smith (to Kennedy): “Never! These are poor people who did nothing to us. They’re more my brothers than you are.”
Kennedy: “You will not fight for your country? How can you say that?”
They went back and forth. Then Smith said that being in the same room with Kennedy made him want to throw up.
Lorraine Hansberry (standing up): “You’ve got a great many very, very accomplished people in this room, Mr. Attorney General. But the only man who should be listened to is that man over there.” She pointed to Smith.
Kennedy turned red. Belafonte had never seen him so shaken.
Then came the flood: others spoke like it was their one chance to tell Kennedy what they truly thought.
Kennedy listened to another few minutes of this and then ended the meeting.
As the meeting broke up, Belafonte approached Kennedy.
Kennedy (angry): “You know us better than that. Why don’t you tell these people who we are?”
Belafonte: “Why do you assume I don’t? Maybe if we were not there telling them who you are, things would not be as calm as they are.”
Kennedy: “Calm? With what’s going on in the streets?”
Belafonte: “Yes. You may think you’re doing enough, but you don’t live with us, you don’t even visit our pain. Obviously, progress in America is in the eyes of the beholder. What you observe, Bobby, and what you want to see of us, is based upon the needs of the political machine. What we need is well beyond that. The problem is the failure of the power players to see us for who we really are and what we are really experiencing. Those children in Birmingham are our children, not yours -”
Kennedy (turns to Burke Marshall, his head of civil rights): “Enough.”
Then Kennedy turned and walked away.

Being close to King meant being a target, too, death threats and bomb scares. Belafonte’s closest call came in 1964. He’d tapped Frank Sinatra, Fonda, Brando, Joan Baez, and his own funds to raise money for the Mississippi Freedom Summer’s voter-registration drive. Then three activists disappeared. On August 4, the FBI found the bodies. That night one of the leaders of the voter drive called Belafonte. Change of plans. Originally, volunteers were to work two-week shifts. Now, they were going to stay—every one of them. They needed more money.
“How much?” Belafonte asked.
“At least fifty thousand dollars,” the activist said—within three days. There was no way a black man in New York could wire $50,000 to a civil-rights activist in Mississippi. Somebody would have to hand deliver. Belafonte called Poitier: “They might think twice about killing two big niggers,” Belafonte told him. When they landed in Jackson, a handful of activists hurried them into a Cessna that took them to a dirt runway in Greenwood. As soon as they stepped off the plane, the pilot wheeled around and took off. Belafonte remembers a single light bulb dangling over a gate to the dirt road beyond; Poitier believes there may have been two. When they got into the car, a pair of headlights across the field popped on.
“Federal agents,” Belafonte told Poitier.
“Agents my ass,” said their driver. “That’s the Klan.” The driver, a man named Willie Blue, made straight for the lights. At the last second he veered off. “Faster, man!” shouted Belafonte. Uh-uh, said Willie Blue. Deputy would pull them over and they’d wind up just like the three boys the feds pulled out of the river. The car jolted when the truck behind them began ramming. It’s okay, said Willie Blue. As long as they could stay in front, the men in the truck couldn’t draw a bead.
Close to town, a convoy came out to meet them. Hundreds of activists, white and black, were waiting in a dance hall. The applause, remembers Belafonte, was like nothing he’d ever known. He let the crowd fall quiet. Just Mississippi night. Then he sang.
Day-o! Day-o-o-o!
He changed the words.
Freedom, freedom, freedom come an’ it won’t be long.
When the song was over, Belafonte held up a black doctor’s bag and dumped $70,000 in small bills on a table.

С главы про Гарри Белафонте начинается новая книга Джеффа Шарлета "The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War".

"They were not interested in converting me. They were not interested in using me. Fuck platforming. They didn’t care. The lines were absolutely drawn. I believe it is because we are in a slow simmering civil war and headed towards a real war. I don't want this to be misread. We’re in a time when it is vulnerable and it's like, Sharlet thinks it's nice to talk to these people. It was clear that when I was in Wisconsin and I would drive around the state that a lot of these folks are lovely and they're fascists. Both are true. I use the word fascist and I don't use it glibly. In my first book The Family, I wrote a chapter called “The F Word”; the F Word was fascism. I was writing about the family's recruitment of Nazi war criminals after World War II. Until recently, I never used it like a lot of folks. I said, look there is more than one kind of bad under the sun, and this isn't fascist, and you need to build perspective. Now we have fascism. And it's not just here; it’s a global fascist moment."
https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/a43374299/jeff-sharlet-interview/

"I think what we understand is that these neofascists are not going to stop, because why would they stop? The pleasure is in transgression. The pleasure is in going further. There is no ideological position to which they are loyal. There is no policy to which they're loyal. They're going to keep going. There is no movement per se but transgression. And as soon as something becomes normal, they'll go further. The folks who imagine "Handmaid's Tale" as the end zone, no, whatever it is, you have to go further. Now, this is the good news too, because a movement of ultimate transgression is going to burn out. As a society and country, America is going to experience and have to go through fascism. We're not in it now. There's a fascist movement now. It drives me crazy. People say, "Well, it's not like the Hitler regime." No, it's not. That was a regime. We don't have a fascist regime. We could with a fascist movement. It's worse post-Trump than it was during Trump's presidency."

Washington was convicted of raping and murdering Lucy Fryer, the wife of his white employer in rural Robinson, Texas. He was chained by his neck and dragged out of the county court by observers. He was then paraded through the street, all while being stabbed and beaten, before being held down and castrated. He was then lynched in front of Waco's city hall.
Over 10,000 spectators, including city officials and police, gathered to watch the attack. There was a celebratory atmosphere among whites at the spectacle of the murder, and many children attended during their lunch hour. Members of the mob cut off his fingers, and hung him over a bonfire after saturating him with coal oil. He was repeatedly lowered and raised over the fire for about two hours. After the fire was extinguished, his charred torso was dragged through the town. A professional photographer took pictures as the event unfolded, providing rare imagery of a lynching in progress. The pictures were printed and sold as postcards in Waco.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynching_of_Jesse_Washington

Speakers at the dedication Sunday of a new official Texas historical marker recognizing Waco’s horrific history of lynchings voiced hope that the marker will serve as a reminder of how the past shapes the present.
A racially diverse crowd of more 300 people, including those who have worked on the Jesse Washington marker for the past seven years, gathered on Third Street in front of Waco City Hall. It was the same ground where a crowd of thousands gathered in May 1916 to watch the torture and burning of Washington, a 17-year-old Black field hand.

WACO — Flanked by supporters waving “witch hunt” signs, former President Donald Trump turned in a signature incendiary performance Saturday in Waco, using his first 2024 campaign rally to frame himself as a victim of politicized legal investigations and vowing to be the MAGA movement’s “retribution.”
"I am your warrior, I am your justice,” Trump said in a nearly 90-minute speech, most of it focused on perceived political enemies and slights. “For those who have been wronged and betrayed … I am your retribution."
Trump positioned himself as the sole protector of American values, painting a grim future if he is denied a second four-year term. <...>
Trump also vowed to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine within a day of beginning his next administration. Though he praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as a smart person, he said the invasion would have never have happened had he been president. He also predicted that Russia would eventually take over Ukraine.

Dan Patrick, the Republican leader local press has dubbed "Trump's man in Texas," told the rollicking crowd at the former president's first official rally for his 2024 presidential bid that he was the reason they were all there.
"I picked Waco," the MAGA-aligned Texas lieutenant governor told rallygoers awaiting Donald Trump's arrival on Saturday night.
Patrick said Trump called him a few weeks back, said he was thinking of coming to town, and urged Patrick to find a great spot to visit. Patrick told the attendees, many of whom had to walk several miles to the Waco regional airport because of a miles-long traffic jam on the two-lane road leading to the remote airstrip, that he immediately thought of two places — and Waco won.
Patrick added that any reports otherwise from the media "back there," he said, motioning in Trumpian fashion to the reporters corralled opposite the main stage, were "fake news."

At all costs Putin cannot be seen to have the approval of the civilised world.
He is making scapegoats of gay people, just as Hitler did Jews. He cannot be allowed to get away with it. I know whereof I speak. I have visited Russia, stood up to the political deputy who introduced the first of these laws, in his city of St Petersburg. I looked into the face of the man and, on camera, tried to reason with him, counter him, make him understand what he was doing. All I saw reflected back at me was what Hannah Arendt called, so memorably, “the banality of evil.” A stupid man, but like so many tyrants, one with an instinct of how to exploit a disaffected people by finding scapegoats. Putin may not be quite as oafish and stupid as Deputy Milonov but his instincts are the same. He may claim that the “values” of Russia are not the “values” of the West, but this is absolutely in opposition to Peter the Great’s philosophy, and against the hopes of millions of Russians, those not in the grip of that toxic mix of shaven headed thuggery and bigoted religion, those who are agonised by the rolling back of democracy and the formation of a new autocracy in the motherland that has suffered so much (and whose music, literature and drama, incidentally I love so passionately).

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis put the final stamp on several of the more contentious proposals of Florida’s legislative session Wednesday by signing into law a ban on transgender minors receiving gender-affirming care and expansions to state’s parental rights rules panned by critics as “Don’t Say Gay.”
In one swoop, DeSantis enacted these bills and other GOP priorities that were sought by the presumptive presidential candidate like making it a criminal offense for someone to use certain bathrooms that don’t align with their sex at birth and blocking children from attending adult-themed drag shows.
The proposals were fiercely opposed during Florida’s lawmaking session by LGBTQ advocates and Democrats who argue the policies target the transgender community and will further marginalize vulnerable kids. One group labeled the DeSantis bill signing as the “slate of hate.”

Образование - один из семи холмов (Religion, Family, Education, Government, Media, Arts & Entertainment, and Business), которые предстоит покорить.

Hillsdale College.

DeSantis signed SB 266, which restricts certain topics from being taught in general education courses, the lower-level classes that all students must take for their degrees. It also expands the hiring and firing powers of university boards and presidents, limits protections for tenured faculty members and prohibits spending related to diversity, equity and inclusion programs beyond what is required by accreditors.
Regarding the restricted topics, the measure borrows language from last year’s Individual Freedom Act, also known as the Stop Woke Act. It targets “theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political and economic inequities.” <...>
Standing at the New College visitors’ center, behind a lectern with the label “Florida The Education State,” the governor mentioned a group of protesters outside the building who grew louder as he spoke. He joked that he was disappointed with the size of the protest and was “hoping for more” from the Sarasota school.
Rufo, who has advised DeSantis on education policy and has been one of the New College board’s more outspoken members, was met by supporters who jostled to take photos with him as he left the event. Outside, about 50 protesters peppered him with insults, calling him a fascist, before police officers escorted him away in a vehicle. <...>
Before signing the bills, DeSantis hailed the state’s efforts to bring more regulation to higher education.
”It’s our view that, when the taxpayers are funding these institutions, that we as Floridians — and we as taxpayers — have every right to insist that they are following a mission that is consistent with the best interest of our people in our state,” said the governor, who is expected to soon mount a campaign for president in 2024. “You don’t just get to take taxpayer dollars and do whatever the heck you want to do and think that that’s somehow OK.”

Heritage Foundation.

“What Americans writ large are realizing is this is our moment.” Roberts said, commenting on the way DeSantis seems to be leading the charge against the left’s cultural agenda. “This is our moment to demand that our politicians use the power they have. This is the moment for us to demand of companies, whether they’re Google, or Facebook, or Disney, that you listen to us, rather than ram down our throats and into our own families all of the garbage that you’ve been pushing on us. This is our time to demand that you do what we say. And it’s glorious.”
“A lot of these fights are really foundational fights about what it means to be an American,” DeSantis said as our interview came to an end. “So, it’s something that we fight for.”

Слова "This is our time to demand that you do what we say" применимы и к частным компаниям вроде Диснея, и к слишком много себе позволяющим университетским профессорам.

"BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Council resolutely rejects any attempts by bodies external to the faculty to restrict or dictate the content of university curriculum on any matter, including matters related to racial and social justice, and will stand firm against any and all encroachment on faculty authority including by the legislature or the Board of Regents".

“During the upcoming 88th Legislative Session, one of my priorities will be eliminating tenure at all public universities in Texas. To address already-tenured professors, we will change tenure reviews from every 6 years to annually. Additionally, we will define teaching Critical Race Theory in statute as a cause for a tenured professor to be dismissed."
https://www.ltgov.texas.gov/2022/02/18/lt-gov-dan-patrick-statement-on-plans-for-higher-education-and-tenure/

We support abolishing the system of tenure in academia and advocate replacing it with a merit-based system for teacher retention."
https://texasgop.org/platform/

"We reject the certified results of the 2020 Presidential Election, and we hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States."
"We urge that the Voting Rights Act of 1965, codified and updated in 1973, be repealed and not reauthorized."
"We urge the complete repeal of the hate crime laws, since ample laws are currently in effect to punish criminal behavior towards other persons."
"Homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice"
"We affirm God’s biblical design for marriage and sexual behavior between one biological man and one biological woman, which has proven to be the foundation for all great nations in Western civilization. We oppose homosexual marriage, regardless of state of origin."
"We believe the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, overturning the Texas law prohibiting same-sex marriage in Texas, has no basis in the Constitution and should be nullified."
"We demand the State Legislature pass a law prohibiting the teaching of sex education, sexual health, or sexual choice or identity in any public school in any grade whatsoever, or disseminating or permitting the dissemination by any party of any material regarding the same. <...> Until this prohibition goes into effect, sexual education shall only utilize sexual risk avoidance programs and promote abstinence outside of marriage."
"We urge lawmakers to enact legislation to abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilization, because abortion violates the US Constitution by denying such persons the equal protection of the law."

Academic freedom is the “freedom of inquiry” pharmacy professor, Andrea Gore said. It allows professors to teach and conduct research outside of the confines of administration or government.
Gore, a faculty council member, said academic freedom is imperative to the foundation of a University because it gives professors the opportunity to pursue cutting-edge research, and it allows students to learn from this research. About a year ago, Gore introduced and passed a resolution to the University’s faculty council in support of academic freedom and critical race theory.
“State legislative proposals seeking to limit teaching and discussions of racism and related issues, have been proposed and enacted in several states, including Texas,” the resolution states. “This resolution affirms the fundamental rights of faculty to academic freedom in its broadest sense, inclusive of research and teaching of race and gender theory.”
Without academic freedom, professors can’t do their job, Gore said, it prevents them from being on the “cutting edge” of research, which is one large piece of what makes the University great. Limits to academic freedom also deeply impact students by depriving them of holistic learning experiences, she said.
“The beauty of academic freedom is that it enables the professors and the students to engage in a dialogue and to go in all of the different possible directions, including those that may not be popular,” Gore said. “If you don’t have academic freedom, neither the faculty nor the students are going to be able to really be able to think beyond what is conventional.”

https://thedailytexan.com/2023/03/02/under-threat-academic-freedom-gives-college-students-the-power-to-fully-understand-the-world-around-them-lawmakers-are-trying-to-take-that-away/
