В попытке навеки отмежеваться от преступного прошлого в ноябре 1992 Борис Ельцин выступил в венгерском парламенте с покаянием за советское вторжение в Венгрию в ноябре 1956.

"Граждане и Венгрии, и России должны знать всю правду о том трагическом времени. И они ее обязательно узнают. Причём не много лет спустя, а уже в ближайшее время. Она нужна не для того, чтобы вызвать мутную волну слепой мести. Без полной правды не восстановить справедливости, не добиться очищения. Без полной правды не привести в действие такие мощные рычаги прогресса, как суд совести, покаяние и прощение… Развитие наших отношений не должно и не может строиться на базе отринутых жизнью жёстких конструкций взаимодействия. Нет смысла восстанавливать какие-либо старые так называемые "союзнические", а на деле жёсткие иерархические отношения, основанные на диктате Москвы… Будем же в своих помыслах постоянно помнить о том, что мы, прежде всего, европейцы – наследники и хранители величайшего достояния. И соответственно действовать"

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán compared Hungary’s membership in the European Union to more than four decades of Soviet occupation of his country during a speech on Monday commemorating the anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet revolution.
Speaking to a select group of guests in the city of Veszprem, Orbán accused the EU of seeking to strip Hungary of its identity by imposing a model of liberal democracy that he said Hungarians reject. Brussels, the de facto capital of the EU, employs methods against Hungary that hearken back to the days of Soviet domination by Moscow, he said.
“Today, things pop up that remind us of the Soviet times. Yes, it happens that history repeats itself,” Orbán said at the event, from which all media were excluded except Hungary’s state broadcaster.

BUDAPEST, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The European Union's strategy with regards to the war in Ukraine "has failed" and the bloc should create a plan B as the Ukrainians will not win on the frontline, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Hungarian state radio on Friday.
Orban, speaking in Brussels on the sidelines of an EU summit, said there was a "big battle" especially over support for Ukraine. Orban said he saw no reason for Hungary to send its taxpayers' money to support Ukraine.
